WASHINGTON -Â GW baseball is set to welcome the Saint Peter's Peacocks to Tucker Field at Barcroft Park for a three-game series this weekend. The series will start with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. and is scheduled to wrap up with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND: GW fell in a pair of walk-offs on Friday and Saturday as part of a three-game sweep at the hands of Tulane to open the year. Junior Greg Anderberg led the team offensively, hitting .444 (4-9) with a double, two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Tyler Hix hit for the cycle over the course of the weekend, providing GW's first home run of the year on Sunday.
FRESH FACES: Fifteen of GW's 27 offensive starts from last weekend were by newcomers, including a combined seven from first-years Logan Doran, Cade Fergus and Noah Levin. Fergus started all three games at leadoff and in center field, collecting a pair of triples at the plate.Â
On the hill, first-year hurler Rich Pfluger pitched out of a big jam in the ninth inning on Saturday to force extra innings and authored 3.2 scoreless and hitless frames with four strikeouts.
PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF:Â Senior right-hander Nate Woods finished last season with a complete game shutout in the A-10 tournament against Fordham and set the tone for his final campaign in the Buff & Blue with 6.1 phenomenal innings in his start on Friday. Woods was perfect through three innings and yielded just two runs (one earned) on two hits with four strikeouts.
HOME SWEET HOME:Â This weekend's series starts a seven-game homestand for the Colonials, who will play 23 of their next 25 games at home. GW will host six straight weekend series, culminating in consecutive A-10 series against Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's in late March. The Buff & Blue were 22-10 at the Tuck last year and have finished above .500 on their home turf in four straight seasons.
ABOUT THE PEACOCKS:Â Saint Peter's did not play last weekend and will open its season with the trip to Arlington. The Peacocks struggled to a 2-42 mark a year ago and were picked to finish 11th in this year's preseason MAAC poll.
Jared Quintero is the team's top returning hitter after he batted .243 with two home runs and 14 RBI last year in 37 games. Overall, five of the team's top eight hitters from a year ago are back.
