Five different Colonials record extra-base hit as part of 11-hit day

NEW ORLEANS - For the second time in as many nights to open the 2019 campaign, GW baseball was on the wrong end of a walk-off celebration, falling 7-6 in 13 innings at Tulane on Saturday night.

Similar to Friday night's game, the Green Wave's winning tally came on an unearned run as a result of a GW defensive miscue. A sacrifice fly from Grant Matthews scored David Bedgood, who had advanced on a fielder's choice error earlier in the inning.

The Colonials' bats came to play early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Dom D'Alessandro opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single and scored along with redshirt freshman Derek Ripp on a two-run triple from sophomore Tyler Hix.

Tulane quickly countered with a two-run homer in the bottom half to slice the deficit to 3-2.

GW added to its lead in the fourth inning on an RBI triple from first-year Cade Fergus, the second three-bagger in as many nights for the newcomer.

An inning later, Tulane evened the score at 4 with another two-run homer. Outside of the long balls, GW starter Jaret Edwards held his own, allowing four runs on six hits in five frames with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Colonials moved back in front, 6-4, with a pair of runs in the seventh inning on a single from Ripp and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of junior Greg Anderberg.

The Green Wave once again drew even with single tallies in the eighth and ninth, but the work of first-year hurler Rich Pfluger extended the game as the southpaw stranded a pair of runners in the ninth.

Pfluger coaxed a double play in the 10th and 11th innings, ultimately authoring 3.2 scoreless and hitless frames in his collegiate debut.

D'Alessandro led GW's offensive effort with a perfect day at the dish, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Ripp notched a pair of hits, as did Anderberg.

The Colonials will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET).
