Edwards' One-Hitter Leads GW Past George Mason

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore right-hander Jaret Edwards tossed a complete-game one-hitter to lead the George Washington baseball team to a 1-0 victory over George Mason in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
A native of Rocky River, Ohio, Edwards was brilliant throughout his first collegiate complete game. He struck out six without issuing a walk and allowed just two base-runners all game, facing one over the minimum thanks to a double play.
Edwards retired the side in order in the first three innings and allowed his first base-runner when he hit the leadoff batter in the fourth. He easily worked around it by setting down the next three.
GW (27-18, 11-5 A-10) got the only run it would need in the fourth after Robbie Metz led off the inning with a double. After a single from Mark Osis moved Metz to third, Dominic D'Alessandro lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in what proved to be the winning run.
Mason got its only hit in the fifth via a one-out, infield single, but Edwards induced a 6-4-3 double play ball from the next batter to end the inning. From there, he retired the next 12 in a row to slam the door on any shot of a comeback.
The Patriots (19-24, 9-7 A-10) also received a standout pitching performance as Zach Mort went eight innings. He surrendered just one run on five hits while also striking out six without issuing a walk and threw just 77 pitches in a game that lasted only an hour and 42 minutes. Mort also held Isaiah Pasteur to an 0-for-4 day as the senior saw his school-record 32-game hitting streak come to an end.
Due to impending rain on Sunday, GW and George Mason will attempt to conclude the series with a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday at The Tuck.
