ARLINGTON, Va. -- The GW baseball team dropped an Atlantic 10 series for just the second time this season as the visiting George Mason Patriots swept a doubleheader at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1: George Mason 5, GW 3
For the second straight game, it was a GW starting pitcher who put forth a dazzling performance, as Elliott Raimo was nearly untouchable for the first five innings. The right-hander retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, striking out seven during that span.
His offense staked him to an early advantage as Robbie Metz delivered a RBI single and Mark Osis drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the first. The Colonials made it 3-0 when Colin Brophy homered to right-center field an inning later.
However, the Patriots were able to scratch across their first run in the series on a two-out rally in the sixth that featured a double and single. Still, Raimo got out of the inning with a strikeout to keep a 3-1 GW lead. The next inning, though, Raimo recorded his 10th strikeout of the day before issuing a walk and at that point, got a visit from the trainer and was removed from the game.
From there, the Patriots went on to score four runs in the inning, all of which were unearned due to a Colonials error, to assume a 5-3 lead. GW had its chances over the next three innings but was unable to cash in for any runs as Mason held on to even the series.
GAME 2: George Mason 4, GW 3
Neither team led by more than a run, and the score was tied for much of the game, but it was George Mason that was able to pull out the victory.
Riding the arm of starting pitcher Jared DiCesare, the Patriots held GW to a single run over the final eight innings. The Colonials plated two runs in the first, while Mason scored single runs in the first and second innings.
In the sixth, Mason edged ahead 3-2, but GW had an answer in the bottom half of the inning on Isaiah Pasteur's RBI double off the top of the wall in right-center field. The game was tied going into the eighth, when the Patriots received a leadoff triple from Michael Smith. His go-ahead run then came across on a sacrifice fly two batters later.
GW couldn't muster the equalizing run in the eighth or ninth as the Colonials saw their A-10 record even out with Mason at 11-7. The Colonials now get a few days of rest before closing out their regular season home slate May 11-13 vs. VCU. First pitch in Friday's opener is set for 3:00 p.m.
