Baseball Defeats Coppin State, 16-5

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The GW baseball team closed the non-conference portion of its regular season slate with a 16-5 win over Coppin State Wednesday evening at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW improved to 26-18 overall with a thorough win over the Eagles, who fell to 17-21-1. Sam Martin led an offensive onslaught with a 4-for-5, three RBI day, as the Colonials tallied 19 hits and were agressive on the base paths with 12 stolen bases. Isaiah Pasteur extended his hitting streak to 32 games with a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Matt Cosentino had three hits and Steven Barmakian drove in three runs on two base knocks.
The Colonials fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first but quickly responded with three in the bottom half of the inning and extended their lead to 16-2 after five innings before Coppin State would strike again.
Chance Malek (1-0) picked up the win on the mound with an inning of scoreless relief after starter Emmett Harkins allowed two runs in four innings. He retired the side in order in his final three frames.
Prior to the game, head coach Gregg Ritchie was presented with his championship ring from last September's USA Baseball U18 World Cup Title. Ritchie, serving as the hitting coach, helped Team USA go 9-0 with a .273 team batting average over the tournament.
GW now shifts its attention back to conference play. The Colonials have a couple of key home series upcoming, with George Mason visiting May 4-6 before VCU the following weekend (May 11-13).
