ARLINGTON, Va. -- Behind a powerful offensive effort in game one and a splendid outing from junior right-handed pitcher Elliott Raimo in game two, the GW baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting North Carolina Central on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials extended their winning streak to five games and have been victorious in 11 of their last 12 to move their overall record to 18-12. On Friday, they got it done in different ways as it was the bats that powered a 10-4 win in game one, before Raimo took center stage in game two which ended as a 1-0 GW win.
GAME 1: GW 10, NCCU 4
The Colonials pounded out 15 hits as five players had multi-hit days, led by Isaiah Pasteur's 3-for-5 effort. Steven Barmakian, Mark Osis, Matt Cosentino and Dominic D'Alessandro had two apiece with Osis also driving in a career-high four RBIs.
On the hill, Jaret Edwards scattered 11 hits in a career-high 6 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) to move his record to 2-0. Will Kobos came on to finish off the Eagles with 2 2/3 innings of work.
After the teams traded single runs in the first and third innings, GW broke it open with a five-run fourth. The Colonials tallied six hits in the frame, including three consecutive run-scoring base knocks from Bryant Holtzapple, Pasteur and Barmakian. Osis capped the inning with a two-out, two-run double to the gap in right-center field.
When the Eagles tallied a run in the seventh, GW answered with a run of its own in the bottom half on a D'Alessandro RBI single. Osis delivered more insurance with a two-run single in the eighth, putting the game well out of reach.
GAME 2: GW 1, NCCU 0
Raimo was nothing short of spectacular for the first five innings, retiring 14 straight while allowing just one baserunner via a walk while striking out nine. He struck out the side in the second and third innings, then set down two via strikeout in the fourth - with all of the strikeouts coming via an Eagles swing and miss.
NCCU broke up his no-hitter in the sixth with a couple of base hits, but he escaped unscathed and continued to impress with 1-2-3 frames in the seventh and eighth.
Despite having its chances, GW was unable to provide run support for Raimo. The Colonials outhit NCCU 8-4 but left 10 on base, including several in scoring position. Their break came in the ninth, when with two outs Colin Brophy reached base after a third strike in the dirt resulted in an errant throw from the NCCU catcher. Another Eagles error put runners on the corners and a wild pitch brought Brophy home to hand GW the 1-0 victory.
Raimo, who was lifted with two on and two outs in the top of the ninth, ended his day with a career-high 12 strikeouts. He allowed just four hits and a walk in 8 2/3 innings. Isaiah Pasteur (1-0), who got the final out in the top of the ninth, was credited with the win.
At the plate, D'Alessandro finished with two hits for the second time in the day and Nate Fassnacht went 2-for-4 with a triple.
