DAYTON, Ohio - The George Washington baseball team saw its six-game win streak end in a 15-9 loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader but got right back into the win column in the nightcap, downing Dayton, 9-2, to even the series ahead of Sunday's rubber game (Noon).
Game 1: Dayton 15, GW 9
An offensive explosion in game one saw the two teams combine for 24 runs, 28 hits and eight home runs, but it was the home team gaining the victory with a late-inning rally.
Isaiah Pasteur, Robbie Metz and Dominic D'Alessandro all went deep for the Colonials to contribute to the offensive effort.
All three finished with multiple hits and multiple RBIs in the game. Pasteur went 3-for-5 with one double, one home run and four RBI, while D'Alessandro enjoyed his first four-hit game in Division I (4-for-5, HR, 2 RBI).
Metz (2 H, 2 R, HR), along with Steven Barmakian (2 H, 1 R) and Brandon Chapman (2 H, 1 R, 1 BB), also contributed multiple hits.
Pasteur's solo home run led off the ball game and put the Colonials on top 1-0, the first of six lead changes across the first five innings of the game. Dayton answered with a two-run home run to seize a 2-1 lead, but D'Alessandro's solo shot in the top of the second tied the game ahead of Pasteur's RBI double, which put GW ahead, 3-2.
The Flyers used a three-run bottom half of the second to take a 5-3 lead, but the Colonials answered right away in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Matt Cosentino and a RBI groundout from D'Alessandro. Metz's two-run shot in the top of the top of the fourth broke the tie and put GW on top, 7-5, but Dayton again turned to the long ball as part of a two-run bottom half of the fourth to tie the game at 7-7.
Pasteur's RBI single in the top of the fifth put GW ahead for the final time at 8-7. The Flyers regained the lead for good with a three-run fifth and added five runs in the eighth to take game one.
Game 2: GW 9, Dayton 2
GW's offense scored six runs over the first three innings to jumpstart a 9-2 win in the nightcap.
Senior Mark Osis homered twice in the victory. The first was a two-run blast in the top of the first inning that ignited GW's outburst. Dayton answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning, but the Colonials created separation in the top of the second on a pair of RBI doubles from Colin Brophy and Pasteur.
GW added to the lead with two runs in the third inning on a RBI groundout from Cosentino and a run-scoring double from D'Alessandro to extend the lead to 6-1.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Elliott Raimo settled down on the mound after yielding a first-inning home run and did not allow a hit over the next two innings. He stranded a leadoff double in the fourth before retiring the side in order in the fifth.
Pasteur added a RBI double in the top of the sixth to give GW a 7-1 lead. Dayton rebounded for a single run in the bottom half to make the score 7-2, but Osis put the game out of reach with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-2.
Raimo earned the win on the mound to improve 2-2 on the season. He went eight strong innings, yielding a pair of runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Junior Will Kobos worked a scoreless ninth to cement the victory.
