WASHINGTON -- The GW baseball team evened its series with VMI by scoring the final seven runs of the game to turn a 5-1 deficit into an 8-5 victory on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Key Stats
- After spotting VMI a 5-1 lead, GW began to chip away. The Colonials scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take their first lead. They padded it with two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
- Andrew Wheeler came on in relief and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the victory. The sophomore right-hander struck out six while allowing just one hit and one walk.
- Isaiah Pasteur came up clutch while pulling double duty. He started the game at third base but moved to the mound with one out in the top of the eighth and the tying run in scoring position and got a groundout and strikeout to escape the threat. In the bottom half of the inning, he padded GW's lead with a RBI single.
- Four Colonials had two-hit days at the plate: Robbie Metz, Mark Osis, Nate Fassnacht and Brandon Chapman who also contributed three RBIs.
- Osis upped his batting average to .370 with a 2-for-4 day.
Scoring
- Top 2: A single and two walks loaded the bases full of Keydets, and Matt Pita drove a two-run single to the gap in right-center field. VMI scored another run on a throwing error (VMI 3, GW 0).
- Bottom 2: Osis cut into the deficit with a leadoff home run to right-center field (VMI 3, GW 1).
- Top 3: Three walks loaded the bases and Nathan Eaton delivered a two-run single (VMI 5, GW 1).
- Bottom 4: Singles from Metz and Fassnacht setup a RBI sacrifice fly from Matt Cosentino (VMI 5, GW 2).
- Bottom 5: With runners on second and third, Steven Barmakian singled to left field to score two (VMI 5, GW 4).
- Bottom 6: Chapman put the Colonials on top with a two-run double to left field (GW 6, VMI 5).
- Bottom 8: After Trevor Kuncl was hit by a pitch, Colin Brophy doubled and Chapman again delivered with a sacrifice fly RBI. Then Pasteur, who had just moved to the mound in the top half of the inning to record two key outs, helped his own cause with a run-scoring single (GW 8, VMI 5).
Up Next
- The Colonials look for a series victory in game three on Sunday at noon.
