Long Ball Lifts Baseball to Series Win Over VMI

ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team earned the series victory on Sunday with a 4-2 win over VMI in the rubber match at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Key Stats
- Nathan Woods turned in seven dominant innings to earn the win for the Colonials. He surrendered just one run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
- Pat Knight pitched the eighth inning and was aided by a huge defensive play to end the frame and preserve GW's 2-1 lead. With a runner on second base and two outs, a base hit had the would-be tying run headed home but an accurate throw from right field by Steven Barmakian and an excellent catch and tag by Brandon Chapman at the plate ended the inning with the 2-1 lead intact.
- GW got three of its four runs courtesy of the long ball. Both Dominic D'Alessandro and Brandon Chapman went deep for the first time this season.
- D'Alessandro finished with two RBIs in the game thanks to his solo home run and a bases-loaded walk
- VMI loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but Isaiah Pasteur earned his second save in as many days by escaping a bases loaded jam to clinch the series.
Scoring - Bottom 3: D'Alessandro's solo home run came off of a 1-2 pitch as the senior sent his first long ball of the season over the wall in left-center field (GW 1, VMI 0).
- Top 4: The Keydets tied the score on a one-out triple followed by a sacrifice fly (GW 1, VMI 1)
- Bottom 4: D'Alessandro drew a bases-loaded walk to retake the lead for the Colonials (GW 2, VMI 1).
- Bottom 8: Cosentino led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a huge two-run home run by Chapman to add key insurance runs (GW 4, VMI 1).
- Top 9: The Keydets were able to load the bases with one out and scored on a fielder's choice RBI (GW 4, VMI 2).
