WASHINGTON -- The GW baseball team held a one-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning but saw the visiting VMI Keydets score four runs to steal a 9-7 win in the series opener on Friday at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Key Stats
- The Colonials held a 6-2 lead after putting up four runs in the fourth inning, but VMI chipped away from there. The Keydets scored a couple of runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to make it 6-5, before exploding for four in the ninth.
- Mark Osis went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and also walked to reach base in all five of his plate appearances. He is now hitting a team-best .362 on the year.
- Eight Colonials accounted for at least one hit in the game. Dominic D'Alessandro joined Osis with a multi-hit, multi-RBI effort by going 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.
- Starting pitcher Jaret Edwards struck out six and mostly held the Keydets at bay until they broke through for a couple of runs with two outs in the fifth, chasing him from the contest. Edwards gave up four runs (two earned) in 4 2/3 innings and did not factor into the decision.
Scoring
- Bottom 1: With two outs, Osis sent a double down the right field line to score Isaiah Pasteur, who reached via lead-off walk (GW 1, VMI 0).
- Top 3: With the bases loaded after two singles and an error, VMI's Peyton Maddox sent a two-run single to right field. The Colonials prevented a third run with a relay throw home to get the base runner trying to score from first, and end the inning (VMI 2, GW 1).
- Bottom 3: Osis delivered another two-out RBI, singling to first base to score Pasteur who had led off the inning with a triple (GW 2, VMI 2).
- Bottom 4: The Colonials strung together five straight singles to start the inning, including a two-run single by Dominic D'Alessandro and a RBI infield single from Bryant Holtzapple. GW's fourth run in the inning scored on a RBI groundout by Steven Barmakian (GW 6, VMI 2).
- Top 5: VMI cut the deficit in half on a RBI single from Jacob Jaye and a two-run double from Maddox (GW 6, VMI 4).
- Top 7: After a lead-off double from Matt Pita, Maddox struck for his third RBI with a sacrifice fly to left (GW 6, VMI 5).
- Top 9: With runners on second and third and two outs, Maddox singled through the left side to score two runs and put VMI on top. The Keydets got two more RBI singles to tally four runs in the frame (VMI 9, GW 6).
- Bottom 9: Robbie Metz attempted to start a two-out rally with a double down the left field line and Osis drove him in with a single, but that's all the Colonials could muster (VMI 9, GW 7).
