ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team stole a single-game school record 15 bases and four players drove in multiple runs in a 20-7 rout of Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker FIeld.
GW (19-18) pulls its record above .500 for the first time this season and has now won three games in a row and five of its last six. The Colonials also improve their record in midweek games to 6-3 while the 20 runs marks a season-high total.
The Colonials used a pair of seven-run innings in the first and seventh to build a lead that was never in doubt throughout the afternoon. GW also tallied a season-high 22 hits with eight of the nine starting position players recording a base knock.
Senior Joey Bartosic and Andrew Selby each stole four bases as part of the Colonials' record-setting total. Bartosic's career total now stands at 77 stolen bases, just two shy of tying the Colonials' all-time record. He is 17-of-20 in attempts this season.
Freshman Steven Barmakian, making his first career start at catcher, turned in a fine performance as he finished 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs and four RBIs.
Senior Eli Kashi also knocked in four runs to set a new single-game career high. He finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored.
Bartosic was 3-for-5 with four stolen bases, two runs and a walk. Senior Bobby Campbell (2 RBI), junior Robbie Metz (3 H, 1 2B, 2 RBI) and junior Mark Osis (3 H, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) also drove in multiple runs.
The Colonials sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, batting around on the way to seven runs on six hits.
Freshman starter Emmett Harkins earned the win for GW after limiting Coppin State to three runs on seven hits across 4.2 innings of work. The Eagles scratched single runs across in the second and third innings but the Colonials responded with two runs in the bottom of the third on RBIs by Campbell and Bartosic.
Coppin State scored one run in the fifth, but it was answered by a run on a double steal in the bottom of the fifth.
The closest Coppin State came to erasing the deficit was when they scored three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-6, but the Colonials exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Colonials added two more runs in the eighth for good measure to reach 20 runs in a single game for the first time since April 21, 2007 - a 20-8 win over Saint Joseph's.
GW will host Rhode Island for a three-game Atlantic 10 series this weekend at Tucker Field. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
