PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Freshman Elliott Raimo pitched six solid innings with six strikeouts and senior Eddie Muhl slammed the door with a scoreless three innings of relief as the George Washington baseball team rolled to a 6-3 win in the series finale over Villanova on Saturday afternoon.
GW (18-18) evens its season record and has now won four of its last five games and five of of the last seven.
Raimo improved to 4-2 on the year after allowing a trio of runs on 10 hits with just one walk and six strikeouts to keep the Colonials in front for the duration of the game. Muhl was phenomenal in relief, striking out five batters across three perfect innings to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Colonials staked Raimo a lead right out of the gate by plating two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning. A fielding miscue on a sacrifice bunt attempt put multiple runners on base early in the inning and junior Robbie Metz cashed in on a two-run single to put GW on top, 2-0.
Raimo worked around two hits in the home first to retire the side and did not allow a base runner in the second before giving up one run in the third inning.
GW broke the game open with a trio of runs in the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles to open the frame by seniors Eli Kashi and Joey Bartosic started the scoring sequence. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up into scoring position and senior Bobby Campbell drove the first pitch he saw up the middle for a two-run single to extend GW's lead to 4-1. Metz came through once again later in the inning with a RBI single push the advantage to 5-1.
Raimo fired another scoreless inning in the fifth before Bartosic drew a two-out walk in the top of the sixth, stole second and scored on a RBI single by senior Andrew Selby to make the score 6-1.
Raimo allowed a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh which cut GW's lead to 6-3, but Muhl entered the game with a man on second and retired the side to preserve the lead. He then blanked the Wildcats in the eighth and ninth innings to give the Colonials their second consecutive weekend-series victory.
Bartosic paced the offense from the leadoff spot by going 3-for-3 with two runs, two walks and and a stolen base. Metz finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Campbell added two RBIs to his team-leading total.
The Colonials aim for three wins in a row when they host Coppin State on Tuesday at Tucker Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
