ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team twice erased early one-run deficits before exploding for 11 unanswered runs over the final five innings in a 13-4 win over Towson on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field.
GW (11-13) plated 13 runs on 12 hits in its fifth straight win over Towson (8-11). Four players drove in multiple runs on the afternoon.
Senior Cody Bryant led the onslaught by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a team-high three RBIs while seniors Joey Bartosic (2 H, 2 SB, 1 R), Andrew Selby (1 2B, 1 R) and junior Robbie Metz (2 H, 2 R) all drove in two runs apiece.
Towson found the scoreboard first with a solo home run in the top of the first off of GW's freshman starter Andrew Wheeler. The rookie rebounded to strike out the final two batters of the inning to keep it a one-run deficit.
GW roared back with a pair of runs on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the first. A sacrifice fly by senior Bobby Campbell tied the game at 1-1 and on the same play a throwing error allowed a Colonial runner to score from third base, giving the home team a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers answered with two runs on three hits and an error in the top of the second but that is all the offense they would be able to muster against GW's bullpen until the game was well out of reach.
A RBI groundout by Bartosic in the bottom of the second inning tied the score at 3-3 and Wheeler retired the side, erasing a leadoff single, in the top half of the third.
Wheeler was lifted after allowing a leadoff walk in the fourth but junior Tyler Swiggart took the ball and promptly got a double play to erase the free pass. He retired the side easily on a ground ball to preserve the 3-3 tie.
GW took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when a screaming two-run double off the bat of Selby blasted off the wall in right center field to put GW ahead 5-3.
Swiggart allowed base runners in each of the next two innings but retired the side without issue.
The Colonials made it 7-3 in the sixth when Metz doubled home freshman Nate Fassnacht, who had led off the frame with one of his three walks on the day. Later in the sixth it was a run-scoring single by Bartosic to make the score 8-3.
Junior Kevin Hodgson worked around a pair of leadoff hits to turn away Towson in the seventh inning and the offensive momentum rolled right into the bottom half as a RBI single by Fassnacht and a sacrifice fly by Metz pushed GW ahead 9-3.
Metz shifted from second base to the mound to start the eighth and retired the side in order.
The Colonials put the game on ice with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. One run scored on a RBI double by junior Mark Osis. Bryant came through with a two-run single to make it 12-3 and the final run scored on a RBI single by Metz.
Metz allowed a RBI single in the top of the ninth before turning away Towson to clinch the win.
Swiggart earned the win in relief with three innings of shutout ball. He allowed just one hit and one walk with a trio of strikeouts.
Wheeler was strong in the no-decision as he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts across three innings.
GW hits the road for its first conference series away from Tucker Field this weekend when it visits VCU for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
