
Men's Tennis Sweeps Monmouth on Sunday

WASHINGTON - The GW men's tennis team shut out visiting Monmouth, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center as part of Homecoming Weekend.
The Colonials (5-3) took an early lead with the doubles point before sweeping singles action. Senior Julius Tverijonas highlighted his day with a victory over a nationally ranked solo opponent.
Tverijonas and junior Chris Fletcher began the day with a victory at the top doubles spot before senior Fernando Sala and junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou won at the No. 2 position to give GW a 1-0 advantage.
Freshman Dennis Afanasev quckly increased the lead with a straight-set triumph at the No. 6 singles position. Fletcher followed with a win of his own after winning a pair of tiebreaks to come out on top in two sets.
Hadjigeorgiou battled at No. 4 play, winning a first-set tiebreak before easily taking the second to clinch the match for the Colonials. Tverijonas closed his top-flight bout just minutes later, downing nationally ranked No. 99 Nicola Pipoli after overcoming a first set deficit.
Junior Chris Reynolds added a three-set triumph at No. 2 and rookie William Tutecky completed the sweep with a three setter at No. 5.
The Colonials return to action next week with a pair of road matches at William & Mary, taking on the host Tribe on Friday before facing DePaul on Saturday.
