BRONX, N.Y. - The No. 7-seeded George Washington baseball team opened the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 5-1 loss to No. 2 VCU on Wednesday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
GW (23-32) will play in an elimination game on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. against the loser of No. 4 Saint Louis and No. 5 Fordham.
Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Michael Dailey earned the win for VCU (37-17) after limiting the Colonials to one run on five hits with one walk and one strikeout through seven innings of work.
Senior Bobby LeWarne took the loss for the Colonials after yielding four runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
LeWarne allowed a leadoff single in the top half of the first but erased it with a ground-ball double play. The next two batters then reached on a single and hit by pitch, but LeWarne thwarted the threat with an inning-ending strikeout.
The Colonials had a chance to score first in the top of the fourth when sophomore Mark Osis singled with one out and stole second, but Dailey retired the side with a fly out and ground out.
The Rams grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the inning after a one-out double by Jimmy Kerrigan and a RBI single by Cody Acker. VCU threatened for more, loading the bases with two outs, but LeWarne got out of the inning with a groundout.
Two more runs came in during the fifth inning. Two runners were on with no outs following a leadoff double and walk. A strikeout, wild pitch combination moved the runners up and then Farrar scored on a balk to make the score 2-0. Another run came in on a wild pitch to extend VCU's lead to 3-0.
Freshman Justin Friedman entered in relief and got the second out on a strikeout but an infield RBI single by Walker Haymaker extended the lead to 4-0. VCU then loaded the bases after a walk before senior Luke Olson ended the inning with a groundout.
GW broke through in the top of the sixth, scoring its first run when sophomore Robbie Metz singled with two outs and then scored on a RBI double by Osis, to make the score 4-1.
VCU got a sacrifice fly after taking advantage of an error in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to four at 5-1.
GW put a pair of runners on to start the eighth inning, but VCU escaped the jam with an infield fly and lineout double play.
Osis finished 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI to pace the offense.
