BALTIMORE - The George Washington baseball team erased a 7-4 deficit by scoring eight runs over the final three innings to top UMBC, 12-8, and avenge last week's loss on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.
GW (11-18) saw its offense come alive in the top of the first inning when junior Joey Bartosic reached on a fielding error to lead off the game. Senior Gabe Scott then came to the plate and ripped a RBI triple to right center field to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Robbie Metz then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Scott and put GW ahead, 2-0.
GW starter Randy Dalrymple did not allow a hit over the first two innings before running into trouble in the third, when he yielded four runs on six hits as UMBC (13-12) pulled ahead, 4-2.
The Colonials pulled even in the top of the fourth with two runs. Senior Matthieu Robert hit a one-out single and moved to third on a double by junior Eric Ramsey. Junior Eli Kashi then drove in Robert on a sacrifice fly to make the score, 4-3. Later in the inning, Scott connected again, this time on a RBI single, to tie the game at 4-4.
The Retrievers took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth after taking advantage of a two-out error. A three-run double by AJ Wright gave UMBC a three-run lead headed to the later innings.
The Colonials commenced their comeback in the top of the seventh inning when junior Cody Bryant earned a RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. However, the Colonials left the bases loaded to head to the seventh-inning stretch trailing, 7-5.
GW took the lead for good with a five-run eighth inning. Ramsey led off with a double and then moved to third on a base hit by Bartosic. A stolen base put runners at second and third ahead of Scott, who legged out an infield RBI single to make the score 7-6.
Metz then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Bartosic and tie the game at 7-7. The go-ahead run came off the bat of junior Bobby Campbell when he connected on a RBI single to put the Colonials on top, 8-7. Later in the inning, Robert connected on a two-run single to extend the lead to 10-7.
Junior Brandon Ritchie and senior Luke Olson combined to blank UMBC in the eighth inning and the Colonials added two more runs in the top half of the ninth, on a RBI single by Bartosic and a RBI double by Metz, to push the lead to 12-7.
UMBC got one run back on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Olson retired the side to clinch the win for the Colonials and his first save of the season.
Dalrymple yielded seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work as the starting pitcher.
Sophomore Chance Malek threw two hitless innings with one walk and four strikeouts before passing the ball on to Ritchie. With the win, Malek improves to 3-0 on the season .
Seniors Scott (three RBIs) and Robert (two RBIs) combined to drive in five of GW's runs while Metz finished 3-for-4 with three runs, one double and three RBIs.
Campbell (3-for-6, one run, one RBI), Bartosic (3-for-6, three runs, one RBI) and Ramsey (3-for-5, three runs) also finished with multiple hits.
GW has now won three of its last four games heading into Wednesday's game at defending national champion Virginia. First pitch from Davenport Field is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
