GW Men's Tennis Grabs Sunday Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The George Washington men's tennis squad triumphed at UNC Greensboro, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts in the last of three road matches this weekend.
The Colonials (10-8) battled in the doubles portion to come away with an early, 1-0, lead. UNCG began the day by taking the second-flight match, but the pair of sophomore Chris Reynolds and senior Cahit Kapukiran answered with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. Junior Julius Tverijonas and senior Danil Zelenkov continued their strong play at the top spot, taking a 7-5 triumph to clinch the doubles point and improve to 9-0 this spring.
In singles play, Reynolds increased GW's lead with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-2, win at the No. 3 spot. Kapukiran followed with a two set victory of his own in sixth-flight action. The Colonials clinched the match after sophomore Chris Fletcher took a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the No. 4 spot.
Zelenkov grabbed GW's final win of the day, coming out on top in a three-set, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, match in No. 2 solo play.
UNCG (7-10) wrapped the day with three-set wins at the Nos. 5 and 1 slots to put the final score at 5-2, in favor of the Buff and Blue.
With the victory, GW has won four of its last five matches. The Colonials wrap the regular season on Sunday, April 10, which will serve as senior day at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus as Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne visits the District for a 10 a.m. match.
