WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team wrapped up its five-game homestand with a 6-1 win over Yale on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (7-10) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, while sophomore Chance Malek earned the win for the Colonials with three innings of shutout relief, surrendering just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts for his first career victory.
Sophomore Joey Bartosic led off the bottom of the first with a single to left field and then stole second with one out. Sophomore Mark Osis followed with a single to put runners on first and second. The duo then successfully completed a double steal, but a throwing error by Yale's catcher allowed Bartosic to score easily from third for the first run of the game.
Junior Kevin Mahala was up next and roped a RBI double to the gap in right center field to score Osis and make the score 2-0. A sacrifice bunt by junior Andrew Selby advanced Mahala to third base and junior Bobby Campbell connected on a RBI double to right center field to give the Colonials a 3-0 lead.
Malek entered in relief to start the second inning and held Yale (0-9-1) in check. The Colonials added a fourth run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Selby led off with a single, advanced to second on an error and scored on a RBI single by junior Larry McCabe.
Senior Luke Olson took the mound to start the fifth inning and worked around a one-out walk thanks to an inning-ending double play that saw sophomore Robbie Metz elevate to snag a line drive and double the base runner off second to end the threat.
Olson got another double play to end the sixth inning to preserve the 4-0 lead.
The Colonials tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a RBI double by sophomore Brandon Chapman and a run-scoring single by Bartosic.
Olson yielded a leadoff double to open the eighth inning and the run eventually scored, but junior Eddie Muhl entered the game and retired the side to limit the damage. Muhl went on to pitch a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts to clinch the game.
Bartosic finished with 2-for-5 with one RBI and three stolen bases while Campbell smacked two doubles with one RBI. Osis also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with one run, one RBI and one stolen base.
Olson yielded one run across 3.1 innings of relief with two walks and one strikeout.
GW now hits the road for a three-game series at Charleston Southern this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
