WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team returned to action on Tuesday afternoon but fell, 6-0, to NJIT in a non-conference game at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (6-10) fell behind, 1-0, in the top of the first and was never able to recover. NJIT (7-8) got on the board with a leadoff triple followed by a RBI groundout.
Junior starter Jordan Sheinkop settled down after the first inning and did not allow a run over the next 4.1 innings, but ran into trouble before exiting in the sixth.
The Highlanders worked a pair of one-out walks to put runners on first and second and chase Sheinkop. Senior Randy Dalrymple entered in relief and yielded an infield single that loaded the bases before inducing an inning-ending double play ball to preserve the 1-0 lead.
NJIT plated three runs on four hits in the top half of the seventh to extend the lead to 4-0, and tagged on two runs in the top of the ninth to make the score 6-0.
The Colonials totaled four hits on the afternoon, with three coming from sophomore Robbie Metz.
Sheinkop took the loss after allowing one run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts across 5.1 innings.
GW concludes its homestand on Wednesday afternoon against Yale at 2:00 p.m. before traveling south for a three-game series at Charleston Southern this weekend.
