WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team clinched a series win over Monmouth with a 7-5 victory in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Senior Jacob Williams earned the win for GW (6-9) on the mound, limiting Monmouth (4-9) to three runs on nine hits across eight innings of work. He walked three and struck out six to earn his second win of the season.
The Colonials plated two runs in the bottom half of the first to stake Williams a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Matt Cosentino roped a one-out ground-rule double down the left field line and advanced to third following walks to sophomore Mark Osis and junior Andrew Selby. Junior Bobby Campbell then came to the plate and smoked a two-run double to the left field corner to put GW ahead, 2-0.
The lead was extended to 3-0 in the third inning on a RBI single by sophomore Brandon Chapman.
GW broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Junior Joey Bartosic started the inning with a leadoff single before stealing second base, and Osis reached on a bunt single which put runners on the corners. Junior Kevin Mahala then roped a double off the wall in left field to extend the lead to 4-0. Selby followed with a squeeze bunt RBI, reaching first base on an error by the pitcher, which scored Osis and moved Mahala to third base.
Campbell tried another squeeze but missed on the bunt attempt. Mahala had already started for home but retreated back to third, avoided a tag and raced home to score and push the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning, both Chapman and sophomore Robbie Metz provided RBI singles to extend the lead to 7-0.
Williams kept it a 7-0 ball game before running into trouble in the ninth. He exited the game after allowing consecutive singles to lead off the inning. Freshman Justin Friedman entered in relief and was tagged for a pair of runs before giving way to junior Eddie Muhl, who got the last two outs to clinch the game and his fourth save of the season.
Chapman went 4-for-5 with two RBIs while Mahala was 3-for-5 with two runs, one double and one RBI. Bartosic (2-for-4, one run), Campbell (2-for-5, one run, two RBIs) and Metz (2-for-4) also added multi-hit games.
GW will conclude play twice at Tucker FIeld during the week, on Tuesday against NJIT (3 p.m.) and Wednesday against Yale (2 p.m.) before traveling south next weekend for a three-game series at Charleston Southern.
