WASHINGTON - Junior Shane Sweeney followed up his dazzling debut last week with five shutout innings on Tuesday afternoon, but the George Washington baseball team was unable to hold off visiting James Madison in a 2-1 loss at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (3-5) staked Sweeney a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Brandon Chapman lined a one-out double to the gap in left-center field and later scored on an RBI single by junior Eli Kashi.
Sweeney yielded a leadoff walk to open the fourth inning, but it was erased on a flyout double play that saw junior Andrew Selby chase down a long fly ball and double up the runner at first base. After a two-out single, Chapman threw out an an attempted base stealer to end the inning.
GW benefitted from another double play that ended a two on, one out jam in the top half of the sixth. After allowing a leadoff single, Sweeney was lifted for senior Luke Olson, who got the first out via groundout, but the next batter singled to put runners on the corners. Junior first baseman Bobby Campbell then displayed split-second reaction time, diving to his right to snag a line drive and recovering to touch the base to complete the unassisted double play.
James Madison (3-5) tied the game in the top half of the seventh on a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly. The Dukes seized a 2-1 lead in the eighth on an RBI double and held the Colonials scoreless in the final two innings to clinch the win.
Sweeney threw five scoreless innings and allowed five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore Tyler Swiggart took the loss for the Colonials after yielding one run on two hits with one walk across 1.1 innings.
Freshman Justin Friedman allowed one hit over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Junior Kevin Mahala finished 2-for-4 with a double, while junior Mark Osis also collected a pair of hits.
GW will return to action when it opens a three-game series with Cal State Northridge on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Tucker Field.
