WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - George Washington senior pitcher Jacob Williams struck out a career high seven batters over 7.2 shutout innings as the George Washington baseball team blanked Ball State, 2-0, on the final day of the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park.
Williams was terrific for GW (3-4) on Sunday, scattering six hits and not giving up a walk while pitching into the eighth inning.
The Newark, Delaware, native allowed just two hits across the first four innings before the Colonials scored what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom half of the fourth.
Junior Andrew Selby hit a two-out triple, his first of the season and 10th of his career, and was brought home on a RBI single by sophomore Brandon Chapman to put the Colonials ahead, 1-0.
Williams ran into trouble in the top of the fifth when he allowed the first two batters to reach via single, but a hard line drive to shortstop Kevin Mahala was the first out in an inning-ending triple play, thwarting the threat.
Ball State (3-5) got a runner to third base in the top of the seventh inning but Williams again escaped the jam with a strikeout.
The Colonials added an insurance run in the eighth inning when sophomore Joey Bartosic singled to center, his third hit of the game, advanced to second on a sacrifice, to third on a groundout and scored on a RBI single by Selby.
Junior Eddie Muhl relieved Williams with a man on second in the eighth, and induced a fly out to end the inning. He then successfully retired the side in the ninth for his second save of the season.
GW will play nine of its next 10 games at home, beginning on Tuesday against James Madison. First pitch from Tucker Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
