DALLAS - The George Washington men's tennis squad split a pair of matches on Saturday, shutting out Eastern Washington, 7-0, in the morning before falling to host No. 60 SMU in the nightcap.
In the first match of the day, the Colonials (3-4) took the early doubles point after sophomore Chris Fletcher and junior Fernando Sala grabbed a quick 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position. The tandem of sophomore Chris Reynolds and senior Cahit Kapukiran won in second-flight action, 6-4, to clinch the point for GW and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Colonials then swept singles play, not yielding a single set to the Eagles on the day. Reynolds earned the next point for GW with his win at the No. 5 position (6-1, 6-0). In his solo debut in dual match play, Sala took a 6-2, 6-1 triumph in sixth-flight action to put the Buff and Blue within one of clinching the match. Sophomore Christos Hadjigeorgiou snagged a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 to give the Colonials the win before the remaining bouts were played out.
Junior Julius Tverijonas, Fletcher and senior Danil Zelenkov came out on top in their matches at the Nos. 1-3 positions, respectively, to complete the morning sweep of Eastern Washington.
The Colonials took on their second ranked opponent of the spring in the evening in No. 60 SMU.
In doubles action, SMU grabbed a win at the No. 3 slot before Kapukiran and Reynolds teamed up to face the nation's No. 18-ranked duo of Nate Lammons and Arkadijs Slobodkins, with the Mustangs coming out on top, 6-2, to take the early point.
In solo play, the Colonials could not overcome a pair of ranked opponents at the top two spots, No. 84 Lammons and No. 51 Hunter Johnson. SMU won the day, 6-1, also recording victories in the bottom half of the ladder.
Zelenkov maintained a perfect day, claiming a hard-fought 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 triumph in third-flight competition.
GW completes its Texas trip on Sunday, as the Colonials take on Texas A&M Corpus-Christi at the Seay Tennis Center in Dallas.
