KINGSTON, R.I. - The George Washington baseball team erased a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the top of the sixth inning and the bullpen blanked the opposition in the final two frames in a 4-3 win over Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
GW (28-17, 12-7 A-10) and Rhode Island (19-19-1, 11-6 A-10) will play the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
The Rams scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and added a single run in the bottom of the third to build a 3-0 advantage and chase GW starter Jacob Williams from the game. Williams turned the ball over to junior Luke Olson in the third inning after allowing three earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Olson faced a bases-loaded jam with one out when he entered the game and yielded a sacrifice fly before retiring the side without further damage.
The Colonials scored all four of their runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Joey Bartosic led off the inning with a single but was forced out on a fielder's choice on which freshman Robbie Metz reached first base. Sophomore Bobby Campbell followed with a single up the middle to advance Metz to second.
After a pop up, sophomore Kevin Mahala sliced a RBI double to right field to make the score 3-1. The next batter was sophomore Colin Gibbons-Fly who connected on a 0-1 pitch for his first career home run, a three-run blast over the fence in left field to put the Colonials ahead, 4-3.
Freshman Kevin Hodgson, who got the final out in the bottom of the fifth inning, yielded a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth before being relieved by senior Craig LeJeune who retired the side to get the game to the seventh inning. The Bristol, Connecticut, native returned to the mound in the bottom half of the inning and worked around a two-out single to retire the side.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl allowed just one hit over the final two innings to pick up his NCAA-leading 16th save of the season. The save also ties him with Bryan Beggs for GW's career-saves record.
Bartosic finished 2-for-4 to earn his team-best 20th multiple-hit game of the season while Metz added a pair of hits for his 15th multi-hit game. Sophomore Andrew Selby added a pair of base knocks to help pace the Colonials' attack.
