WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team clinched the series sweep over St. Bonaventure with an 8-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.
Junior Jacob Williams earned the win with seven shutout innings of relief. After entering the game in the third inning, he scattered six hits with two walks and four strikeouts for his second win of the season.
Junior Shane Kemp got the start for the Colonials and pitched his way out of jams in both the first and second innings. In the top of the first, Kemp erased consecutive one-out walks with an inning-ending double play. In the second, he got consecutive groundouts to strand two baserunners on second and third base.
GW (13-8, 4-1 A-10) broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Brandon Chapman and sophomore Andrew Selby drew consecutive one-out walks ahead of sophomore Kevin Mahala, who responded with a RBI single to put GW ahead 1-0.
Freshman Matt Cosentino followed with a RBI double to the gap in right center to make the score 2-0 and then sophomore Eli Kashi executed a squeeze bunt to extend the advantage to 3-0. Sophomore Joey Bartosic then came to the plate and singled to left field to drive in Cosentino and make the score 4-0.
St. Bonaventure (10-5-1, 0-3 A-10) was able to score its only run in the top of the third inning before Williams entered in relief and worked out of a bases-loaded jam to end the inning.
The Colonials offense struck again in the fifth inning when Bartosic led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Sophomore Bobby Campbell then laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Bartosic and push the lead to 5-1.
GW scored three more runs in the sixth inning to push the advantage to 8-1. Selby led off with a single down the right field line and then advanced to third when Chapman doubled off of the wall in left field.
Cosentino then reached base on an error by the Bonnies' left fielder on a sacrifice fly, allowing Selby to score. Kashi followed with a RBI single to run the lead to 7-1 and Bartosic recorded a fielder's choice RBI to make the score 8-1.
Williams pitched around trouble in the seventh inning, getting an inning-ending double play, before silencing the Bonnies in the final two frames.
