DAVIDSON, N.C. - The George Washington men's tennis squad took three singles matches, but was edged by Atlantic 10 foe Davidson, 4-3, on Saturday at the Wildcats' Knobloch Tennis Courts.
The Colonials (5-9, 0-1 A-10) claimed victory in the top doubles position as senior Francisco Dias and junior Danil Zelenkov topped their Wildcats opponents, 8-2, but losses in the Nos. 2-3 positions gave the early point to Davidson (10-3, 3-0 A-10).
In singles action, Zelenkov improved his solo mark to 8-6 with a three-set, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, triumph in the top spot, while freshman Chris Fletcher climbed to 7-6, winning six of his last seven matches, all in third-flight battles. GW's final point came courtesy of junior Cahit Kapukiran at the bottom of the ladder, taking a 6-3, 6-3, edge over Davidson's Jordan Hart.
Senior Francisco Dias fought hard in his second-tier match before being topped, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). The Wildcats solidified the victory by earning points at the Nos. 4 and 5 slots.
The Buff and Blue will remain in North Carolina to take on Elon (5-8) on Sunday at the Phoenix's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m.
