ELON, N.C. - The George Washington men's tennis squad closed out spring break play with a 4-3 win over Elon on Sunday afternoon at the Phoenix's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Colonials (6-9) took the doubles point when senior Francisco Dias and junior Danil Zelenkov topped their opponents at the top spot, after the Phoenix (5-9) won the second-flight match. In the No. 3 position, freshman Chris Reynolds and junior Cahit Kapukiran battled for an 8-7 (7-5) win to clinch the early point.
In singles action, GW quickly increased its lead to two with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the bottom of the ladder by Kapukiran for the second day in a row. Elon pulled within one with a victory at the No. 3 slot, but Reynolds added distance with his 7-5, 6-4 fourth-flight win.
Elon extended the match by taking the fifth-singles bout, but Dias clinched the victory for the Buff and Blue in the two-slot, coming out on top in a 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 come-from-behind effort. The Phoenix took the top-flight match to put the final score at 4-3.
The Colonials will travel to Houston, Texas for a trio of matches hosted by Rice over the weekend of March 28-29, taking on the host Owls (7-10) and No. 69 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-3) on Saturday and Louisiana-Lafayette (9-8) on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
