WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis team upset No. 65 DePaul in a come-from-behind 4-3 win on Saturday at the Southeast Tennis Center.
The Colonials (4-6) dropped the early doubles point, despite an 8-4 win by the No. 1 pair of senior Francisco Dias and junior Danil Zelenkov.
In singles action, Zelenkov tied the score at one with a top-flight triumph in straight sets. The Blue Demons (7-4) then notched victories at the No. 4 and 5 slots to take a 3-1 lead over the Colonials.
Freshman Chris Fletcher battled at No. 3 to pull GW within one after a 4-6, 6-5, 7-6 (1) comeback over DePaul's Nathan de Veer, before classmate Christos Hadjigeorgiou knotted the score at three with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 win in the No. 6 spot.
Dias clinched the match for the Buff and Blue after a marathon effort to come out on top with a 7-6 (0) 6-7 (4), 6-4 victory over Stan Leusink in second-flight action.
The win over DePaul marks the first triumph over a ranked opponent in 2015 and serves as the third consecutive win for the Colonials. GW will return to action at Miami on March 6 to open an eight-match road swing.
