GW Men's Tennis Wraps Play at Elon Invitational

ELON, N.C. - The George Washington men's tennis team completed play in the two-day Elon Invitational on Sunday at the Phoenix's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The hidden dual format tournament matched GW against players from UNC-Asheville and host Elon. Six representatives from each squad competed in solo play, while three doubles pairs made up a trio of flights.
Sophomore Jabari Stafford went undefeated at No. 6 singles, triumphing over UNC-Asheville's Olly Cull, 7-6, 7-6, before downing Elon's Taylor Foote, 6-3, 6-2, to wrap the weekend.
Sophomore Chris Reynolds, senior Cahit Kapukiran and junior Fernando Sala each split a pair of matches in flights 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Reynolds fell to UNC-Asheville's Henry Patten, 6-4, 6-2, before bouncing back to down Elon's Peter Romic, 6-3, 7-6. Kapukiran - entering his first tournament of the fall with a 10-match singles win streak dating back to March 9 - extended his streak to 11 with a victory over UNC-Asheville's Josh Swindler, 6-2, 6-2. Kapukiran's streak was snapped by Elon's Chris Humphreys, who defeated this GW counterpart in a close, 0-6, 6-2, 11-9, bout. Sala began the tournament with a win, 6-2, 7-6, over UNC-Asheville's Brett Landau before falling to Elon's Felipe Osses-Konig, 6-4, 6-2, to close the weekend.
Sophomore Chris Fletcher, playing at the top spot, dropped matches to UNC-Asheville's Alex Crocker, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0, and Elon's Robert Lindgren, 6-2, 6-4.
In second flight action, sophomore Christos Hadjigeorgiou fell to UNC-Asheville's Daniel Kripak, 6-0, 6-4, before dropping a three-set, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, battle with Elon's Mario Paccini.
In doubles play, the pair of Fletcher and Hadjigeorgiou competed at the No. 1 position and triumphed over UNC-Asheville's Crocker and Landau, 6-4, before being defeated by Elon's Lindgren and Paccini in a close, 8-7 (3), bout.
Reynolds and Kapukiran teamed up for flight 2 doubles action and won their first match against UNC-Asheville's pair of Kripak and Thomas Orestis-Panoulas, 6-2. Elon's duo of Tomic and Humphreys then downed GW, 8-5, to wrap second flight play.
Sala and Stafford competed in No. 3 doubles action and opened the weekend with a 6-4 win over UNC-Asheville's pair of Patton and Swindler before falling to Elon's Konig and Foote, 8-4, to wrap the weekend of play.
The Colonials will return to the court on Oct. 15, for the USTA/ITA Atlantic Region Championships hosted by Virginia Tech.
