RICHMOND, VA - George Washington men's tennis freshmen doubles duo Ulrik Thomsen and Viktor Svensson captured the only Colonials victories on Sunday against No. 58 VCU, falling 6-1.
"The team competed great today," said GW head coach Greg Munoz. "This is how we need to play everyday. Win or lose, playing this hard is commendable against the highest ranked team we have faced this year."
The pair defeated VCU's Filip Svensson, older brother of GW's Viktor, and Jordan Dyke, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles match.
GW put extreme pressure on VCU in the No. 1 doubles match, as Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah pushed Camill Salomon and Jaime Vasquez to win by a 9-7 score to earn the doubles point.
Thomsen picked up GW's sole singles victory at the No. 4 match when he defeated Filip Svensson, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(7).
Hannah fell in a tight No. 5 singles match to Salomon, 7-6 (4), 7-6(4).
The Colonials head to Boca Raton, FL to take on Florida Atlantic on Sunday, March 13, with a 1:00 p.m. start at Patch Reef Park Tennis Center.
