BOCA RATON, FL-- The George Washington men's tennis team traveled south for a Spring Break match in Florida on Sunday, defeating Florida Atlantic, 5-2, at Patch Reef Park.
The FAU Owls secured the doubles point, topping the Colonials at the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. The 8-5 loss at No. 3 doubles stopped freshmen Ulrik Thomsen and Viktor Svensson's win streak at four matches.
"The difference in our team this year is certainly our depth," said head coach Greg Munoz. "Our guys continue to show that it takes a team to win."
With Ugur Atalay and Alexander van Gils sitting out singles, the Colonials still were able to dominate the Owls.
Senior Erik Hannah quickly defeated his opponent at the No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, shifting the momentum to the Colonials rackets.
Richard Blumenfeld followed Hannah's lead and won in straight sets at No. 6 singles, winning, 7-6(5), 6-2.
"I was really proud of Richard," said Munoz. "He wanted to play and he showed great focus and composure at number six."
Thomsen, playing at No. 3, came from down a set to win 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-1, while Svensson won in three sets at No. 5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
