RICHMOND, VA - The George Washington men's tennis team improves to 5-0 against Atlantic 10 opponents, after defeating Richmond, 7-0, on Saturday at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
"We go into every conference match with something to test ourselves for the conference tournament," said head coach Greg Munoz. "So far we have come away with positive results."
The Colonials began by sweeping the Spiders in doubles matches. Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah won at the No. 1 match, 8-6, over Jesse Feder and A.J. Nelson. Freshmen Ulrik Thomsen and Viktor Svensson won, 8-3, over Sebastien Fauchet and Dylan Schrode at the No. 2 match.
In singles action, GW only dropped one set to Richmond. GW's Hannah dropped the first set, 2-6, to Nelson, but was able to come back to win 6-2, 1-0(2).
Svensson, at No. 6 singles, won his seventh consecutive match in a 6-3, 6-1, defeat over Rafael Arana. Yan Levinski, Atalay and Alexander van Gils defeated their Richmond opponents in straight sets.
"Tomorrow will be a test at the national level with VCU, ranked 58th in the nation," said Munoz. "We have come up just short against previous ranked opponents. We have nothing to lose tomorrow and if our guys play with confidence, we feel we can pull off an upset."
The Colonials will take on No. 58 Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, VA.
