GW Falls To Iona In Series Opener, 6-1

ARLINGTON, VA- The George Washington baseball team fell to Iona College on Friday afternoon in the first game of a three-game series, 6-1. Sunday's scheduled game has been cancelled due to the forecast calling for heavy rains. As a result, a doubleheader will be played on Saturday afternoon starting at 12:00pm.
GW (2-7) fell behind 6-0 for the second game in a row and was unable to mount a comeback. Iona's Justin Wiley was dominant on the mound, allowing just one run over seven and two-thirds innings while striking out five.
The Colonials were able to collect six hits on the afternoon but could not take advantage of their opportunities, stranding a total of nine runners on base.
Brian Derner got the start for the Colonials and gave up six runs (five earned) over six innings of work. Freshman Craig Lejeune looked strong in relief, striking out five batters over three shutout innings.
Sunday's scheduled game has been cancelled due to the forecast calling for heavy rains. As a result, a doubleheader will be played on Saturday afternoon. A nine inning game will commence at 12:00 pm with a seven-inning game following approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
Senior RHP Joe Richardson will take the ball for the Colonials in game one against Iona's Eddie Macaluso while redshirt senior LHP Bobby Lucas will face off against Thomas Kriss in game two.
