ARLINGTON, VA- The George Washington baseball team opened their 2011 home schedule on Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park against district rival Georgetown but were unable to overcome the Hoya's early offensive attack, falling 12-7.
The Hoyas tagged senior starting pitcher Tommy Gately for three runs in both the third and fourth innings to jump ahead 6-0. The Colonials would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a RBI single from sophomore Kyle Gelling.
Georgetown would explode for six runs in the top half of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 12-1, but the Colonials refused to go away quietly.
GW (2-6) would lead off the home half of the eighth with consecutive singles by Jimmy Best and Tyler McCarthy. They would score on freshman Owen Beightol's two-run double. Ollie Mittag's RBI single scored Beightol and Stephen Oswald followed with a double to deep center field to put runners on second and third base with no outs.
Senior Brendon Kelliher would continue the rally with an RBI single and another run would follow with a sacrifice fly by Gelling. Brett Bowers would provide the sixth and final run of the inning with an RBI single to knock in Kelliher to cut the Hoya's lead to 12-7.
This is as close as the Colonials would come as Georgetown's Mike Seander worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game.
George Washington will attempt to snap their four-game losing streak on Friday afternoon when they host the Iona in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
