RICHMOND, VA - The George Washington University baseball team had 24 base runners on Sunday afternoon in an 11-5 victory over the Richmond Spiders. This gives the Colonials the series victory and a 9-3 overall record in the A-10 conference. Junior Eric Cantrell earned his sixth win of the season, going eight innings and striking out 10 batters.
The offense was led by sophomore Stephen Oswald, who went 4-4 and drove in two in the winning effort. Sophomore Ryan Thomas also had a three-hit day and drove in a pair of runs. The Colonials all told had seven hitters record multi-hit games and three drove in multiple runs.
The Colonials offense was stagnant in the first three innings and saw themselves score in every inning after that scoring four runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the ninth. Every other inning during that stretch they scored a single run.
Cantrell also had his second straight double digit strikeout game in a row and his third on the season. He pushed his team-leading strikeout total to 75 on the season. The win gives the Colonials a 9-3 conference record and is currently a half-game out of first place with Charlotte's Sunday game still in progress.
The loss drops the Spiders to 17-17 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The Colonials will resume mid-week action when they travel to UMBC for a game on Wednesday afternoon before resuming A-10 conference play next weekend against Charlotte at Barcroft Park. The UMBC game is set for a 3:00 p.m first pitch and the Colonial starter is still undecided. The three-game set against Charlotte begins Friday at Barcroft Park.
