WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball team went on the road before their big series against Charlotte and led throughout in a 9-5 victory. Freshman Brian Derner got the start for the Colonials and earned his second win of the season by going four innings. The Colonials also got strong efforts from the bullpen, allowing just one run in four innings of relief.
The Colonials got home runs from Paul Pakan and Stephen Oswald and three hits from Tom Zebroski in the victory. Oswald also drove in four runs and Pakan and Zebroski each drove in a pair. Sophomore Ryan Thomas also added a walk and a hit and came around to score both times to help pace the offense.
The Colonials burst out of the gate and scored five runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead. The offense though struggled until the ninth inning when it added three, but was held to just one run from innings two to eight. The Colonials also had to face nine different UMBC pitchers, who changed each inning of the ballgame.
Freshman Justin Albright also earned his first save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning and struck out two. The home run for Oswald was his seventh on the season to move into third place on the team.
The Colonials now will resume action with a big A-10 conference series when they take on first place Charlotte for a three-game set. The Friday game will start at 4:00 p.m. and the weekend contests start at 1:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m respectively.
