Colonials Fall Late To Charlotte in 7-4 Loss

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington Colonials opened up a three-game pivotal series against the Charlotte 49ers on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park and fell late in a 7-4 loss. The Colonials were tied at four, but gave up three eighth inning runs to drop the series opener.
Senior Ryan Lapointe got a tough luck loss in the game, giving the Colonials seven tough innings against the potent 49ers offensive attack. The senior allowed four earned runs and struck out three in falling 5-4 on the season.
The Colonials got a big offensive game by senior Chris Luick, who went 3-4 and scored a run in defeat. Freshman Tyler McCarthy and Paul Pakan each hit home runs for the Colonials in consecutive innings for the Colonials to draw even after five innings. The home run was McCarthy's first on the year and was Pakan's third.
Freshman Justin Albright continued to shine out of the Colonials bullpen as he threw 1 ½ shutout innings after getting the save Thursday night at UMBC.
The 49ers were led by junior first baseman Ryan Rivers, who recorded three hits including two home runs and drove in three runs. Designated hitter Mike Perkins also homered for Charlotte, which came as the top hitting team in the A-10 conference.
The series will continue at Barcroft Park on Saturday afternoon with a start time of 1:00 p.m. The weather report in the Arlington, VA area is calling for rain so check in with GWSports.com for updates on its status. The Colonials will send junior Eric Cantrell to the mound.
