Late Rally Sends Colonials to 6-5 Victory

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball team saw themselves down 2-0 in the fifth inning, but came back with six runs late for a 6-5 victory at UMES. Freshman Ryan Heinz got the start and allowed five earned runs in five innings. The Colonials though got four shutout innings out of freshman Brian Derner and Jeff Griffith to hold on for the victory. The duo struck out seven in the four perfect innings.
The Colonials were led by Tom Zebroski who recorded three hits and drove in a run. Senior Chris Luick also drove in two runs and scored a run and junior Brendon Kelliher scored a run and hit an RBI double. Freshman Paul Pakan reached pace three times on two walks and a hit and scored a run.
The key inning for the Colonials was a four-run fifth inning to give them a 4-2 lead. They immediately gave the lead back to UMES with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but rallied for single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to give them the win.
George Washington will start A-10 conference play when they begin a three-game series against St. Bonaventure starting Thursday, April 1st. They will play a three-game series through Saturday with the first two games having 3:00 p.m. start times and the Saturday game having a 12:00 p.m start time.
