ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team used a five-run third inning to lift them to an 8-5 victory over St. Bonaventure Thursday afternoon at Barcroft Park. Senior Tom Zebroski went 3-5 to pace the offense and senior Ryan Lapointe gave George Washington eight strong innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The Colonials were also led by freshman Paul Pakan, who recorded two hits and scored two runs in the victory. Freshman Tyler McCarthy also went 3-4 on the day and scored a run. Junior Brendon Kelliher continued his hot streak, going 2-4 with three runs driven in and a run scored.
LaPointe though was the workhorse for the Colonials, going eight innings and allowing four earned runs and striking out three. Sophomores Stephen Oswald and Marshall Seedorff combined to pitch the ninth inning and Seedorff picked up his second save in the process.
The Colonials took an early 1-0 lead in the second, but the Bonnies scored two in their half of the inning to go up 2-1. In the pivotal bottom of the third, the Colonials scored five runs to take a commanding 6-2 lead, which they would not relinquish. St Bonaventure rallied in the eighth and ninth for single runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
George Washington aims for its fifth straight A-10 Conference victory when it takes on the Bonnies in the second game of the three-game series Friday, April 2nd at Barcroft Park at 3:00 p.m. The series will conclude with a noon game on Saturday, April 3rd.
