WASHINGTON -- Junior Erik Hannah found his stride early in the day, winning all four of his matches Sunday, when the Colonials hosted Atlantic 10 opponent Richmond and non-conference foe St. John's at the Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. GW defeated Richmond, 5-2, to go 4-0 against A-10 teams, but fell in the afternoon match against St. John's, 4-3.
Hannah extended his winning streak with a big win over Stefan Bojic of St. John's. Bojic defeated Hannah last season playing with Radford.
In today's matches, the Colonials ironed out their play in doubles matches, winning five of six.
"I was very pleased with our overall doubles," said head coach Greg Munoz. "It's taken four years to put together three strong doubles team's and I think we finally have it. The doubles point will prove crucial to winning this year's conference title, as there are 8 teams that could take the title.
After winning the doubles point against Richmond, the Spiders took the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches before the Colonials came back to sweep singles No. 3 through No. 6. Chris Kushma, at No. 4, and Richard Blumenfeld, at No. 5, took their matches to tiebreakers to defeat their Richmond opponents.
Against St. John's in the afternoon match, GW's No. 3 doubles pair, Yan Levinski and Blumenfeld, powered back from their morning loss to soundly win against St. John's, 8-1.
After securing the doubles point, GW got victories by Ugur Atalay at No. 1 singles, and Hannah at No. 3 but the Red Storm battled through three of four tiebreaker sets to take the team win.
The Colonials hit the road will travel to Annapolis on Wednesday, Mar. 24, to take on Navy at 2:30 p.m.
