Colonials Fend Off UMES, Extend Winning Streak to Eight

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball team played their second out of conference game in as many days at Barcroft Park and came away with a 5-2 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. It was the eighth victory in a row for the Colonials, who are currently on their longest winning streak since the 2004 season when that team won a program-record 14 games in a row.
Freshman Ryan Heinz got the start for the Colonials and earned his first win by throwing six innings, allowing just two earned runs. The Jacksonville, FL native struck out five and gave up four hits on the afternoon. Senior Curtis Eward continued to swing a hot bat as he went 2-4 with a run driven in and scored. Freshman Tyler McCarthy also reached base three times and scored a run.
The Colonials scored two quick runs in the first inning and held a 3-1 lead after two innings. The Hawks tacked on a run in the fifth inning, but a two-out single by senior Tom Zebroski pushed the Colonial lead to the eventual 5-2 final score. The Hawks had runners on second and third and less than two outs in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to score any more runs.
Senior Bobby Lucas threw two impressive innings out of the bullpen and was able to not allow any of his two inherited runners in the seventh cross the plate. The Baltimore, MD native only allowed one hit and struck out three. Sophomore Stephen Oswald came in and threw a quick ninth inning to record his first save in a George Washington uniform. The right-hander allowed one hit and also struck out a batter.
The Colonials will now have Thursday off and will return to action on Friday against Cleveland State at 3:00 p.m. The teams will continue play into the weekend with the Saturday contest beginning at 1:00 p.m and a series finale with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
