MONROEVILLE, PA -- The George Washington men's tennis team was back in action against Duquesne Friday, Feb. 12, defeating the Dukes, 6-1, at the Club Sport and Health tennis facility.
In doubles action, the Colonials' Chris Kushma and Yan Levinski fell at the No. 1 match to Steve Herchko and Mark Maciuch 8-4. GW battled back to take the No. 2 and No. 3 matches when Richard Blumenfeld teamed up with Ugur Atalay to defeat Mikhael Rasner and Brian Roberts 9-8, while Arya Vayghan and Erik Hannah defeated Jeremy McClelland and Matt Smith 8-2.
Levinski, at the No. 1 singles spot, fell to McCleland in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The Colonials rallied and won the next five matches, two in straight sets. At No. 2, Kushma battled back from 3-6 in the first set to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 over Rasner. Atalay also bounced back in the No. 3 singles match to defeat Maciuch 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
"Chris Kushma played a red hot Rasner who has had some big victories this year, but his off court training, thanks to Alex Parr, kept him strong throughout the match as his opponent cramped late in the third set," said head coach Greg Munoz. "Ugur Atalay and Arya Vayghan's conditoning also proved a factor as they both finished strong in the third set."
Hannah and Blumenfeld took their matches in straight sets at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions for the Colonials. Vayghan defeated Smith at the No. 6 spot for GW, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"I was pleased with the progress the team has made in the past month, but we know the conference tournament is what it is all about and we still have work to do," said Munoz.
The match was the first for the Colonials since beginning the season at Old Dominion Jan. 16 due to winter storms. GW next travels to face Maryland on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.
