COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Junior Yan Levinski captured the only victory for the Colonials men's tennis team when they took on the University of Maryland on Saturday, falling 6-1 to the Terps.
Levinksi won the first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), to defeat Ryan Lissner in the second set 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
"Yan showed great heart and fight with a tough home crowd in his match," said head coach Greg Munoz. "They were loud and rude and Yan could have given up, but he used it as inspiration, and played his best match to date."
The Colonials dropped all three doubles matches to the Terps. At No. 2 doubles match, Ugur Atalay and Richard Blumenfeld battled against Sergio Wyss and Ian Mansfield, but fell 8-6.
In singles action, Atalay pushed Jesse Kiuro at the No. 4 singles match in the second set but he couldn't get the win to force a third set. Atalay lost to Kiuro 6-3, 7-5.
"Ugur was two points from taking the second set, which could have changed the whole dynamic of the match," said Munoz. "He lost the fourth point, and if he went to that third set, the other matches would have been tighter for our opponents."
GW heads back out on the road this coming weekend, opening Friday, Feb. 26 at Cornell with the match starting at 2 p.m. On Saturday the Colonials face head coach Greg Munoz alma mater Binghamton at 1 p.m. before taking on No. 56 Columbia on Sunday at 10 a.m.
