ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team won its second straight against the Central Connecticut Blue Devils on Saturday, when they rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to win by the score of 9-5.
Chris Neary earned his third win of the season and freshman Stephen Oswald hit his first career home run in the contest.
The Colonials jumped on the Blue Devils quickly against as they scored four first-inning runs to take a commanding lead. Junior Tom Zebroski led off the game with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. The first run scoring hit was a single by Sean Rockey, who also advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brendon Kelliher then hit a double to left field, which brought Rockey home to extend the lead to 2-0. This brought up Oswald, who hit a towering home run off the center field scoreboard and extended the Colonial lead to 4-0.
Senior Chris Neary was working efficiently through his seven innings of work, but ran into trouble in the third inning when he allowed five runs to the Blue Devils on seven hits. It was the only frame of the game in which the Blue Devils scored, but they were able to put up five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Neary only allowed one hit the rest of the way and finished with eight strikeouts.
Central Connecticut State held that lead until the fifth inning, but the Colonials added five runs aided by three Blue Devil errors to take a 9-5 lead that they would hold the rest of the way.
Junior Ryan Lapointe closed the game with two scoreless innings and struck out three batters. He lowered his ERA to 1.84 with today's effort, which has come starting and in relief.
The series will conclude Sunday when the Colonials face these same Blue Devils at 12:00 p.m. Right hander Pat Lehman is the probable starter for George Washington
