Colonials Fall 11-7 to Blue Devils in Series Finale

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team lost a tough game at Barcroft Park on Sunday afternoon, after giving up six ninth inning runs to fall 11-7. Pat Lehman was dominant once again with 11 strikeouts in eight innings, but the bullpen faltered in dropping the final game of the series.
Designated hitter Curtis Eward led the offense with three hits and Andrew Haberern hit his third home run on the season and also walked twice. The Colonials once again struck first with a run in the first inning, but quickly gave up two runs in the third inning to fall behind 2-1.
The big breakthrough for the Colonials was the four-run seventh inning, which was keyed by a sacrifice fly by Bryan Hwang and an RBI single by Brendon Kelliher. They also took advantage of a Blue Devil error to score two more runs and open their lead up to 6-3.
The ninth inning though proved to be the undoing for the Colonials as they gave up six runs, keyed by four walks and a Richei Tri home run to fall behind by the 11-7 final score. The inning was also keyed by two errors, which contributed to George Washington committing six errors on the game in the tough rainy conditions.
Lehman continued his hot start to the 2009 season, allowing only one earned run and keeping his ERA below one at 0.94. He now has only given up three earned runs in 29 innings of work and has struck out 36 batters.
George Washington will return to the field on Tuesday, March 17th when they face off against Randolph-Macon at Barcroft Park at 3:00 p.m. The Colonials will continue their home schedule next weekend as well, when they open A-10 conference play against Rhode Island. The starter for Tuesday has not been announced yet.
