McLEAN, VA - Led by three singles victories and a doubles win from the team of junior Daniel Balke (Portage, MI) and sophomore Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN), the George Washington men's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2006 season with a 4-2 triumph over Howard at the Regency Sport & Health Club.
In singles play, Balke, sophomore Mark Doumba and senior Will Timmons (Greenville, SC) were all victorious in their respective matches as all three won in straight sets. At No. 3, Balke rallied off six straight games to close out his match in the second set after falling behind 3-0.
Balke and Salyer clinched the victory for the Colonials with an 8-6 doubles win over Kenneth Brown and Neilabh Avasthi.
GW is back in action when it travels to Annapolis, MD, on Saturday, Feb. 4, to take on Navy at 11 a.m.
