McLEAN, VA - The George Washington men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought Atlantic 10 Conference match to Richmond, 4-3, on Friday, Feb. 10, at the Regency Sport and Health Club. Sophomore Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) won his second straight singles match to lead the Colonials against the defending A-10 champion Spiders.
With the score tied at 3-3 following singles play, and with each team capturing a doubles match, the Spiders' tandem of Doug Barker and Brett Waikart overcame three match points at No. 2 to top Salyer and junior Daniel Balke (Portage, MI), 9-8, 9-7 in the tiebreaker.
In singles action, sophomores Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey) and Salyer posted victories at No. 1 and 2, respectively, while sophomore Mark Doumba (Bradenton, FL) won at No. 5 in straight sets. Gencsoy dropped his first set to Barker, before closing out the match 6-1, 6-1.
GW returns to the courts when it travels to Dayton on Friday, Feb. 17, for a conference match at 1 p.m.
