WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials men's tennis team edged past Xavier, 4-3, Friday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. GW improved to 13-6 in the spring while Xavier dropped to 14-6.
After the Colonials won the doubles point by capturing the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, Xavier came back to win at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 singles.
Freshman Matt Treadgold (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central), who had been sidelined with a back injury, played for the first time since March 23. He defeated Xavier's Brent Lehring, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Treadgold then teamed with senior Kevin Wright (Seminole, FL/Thomas Howard Academy) to win a tough 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles.
Wright also won at No. 4 singles as did sophomore Brett Warner (Vienna, VA/James Madison) at No. 6.
"The guys really stepped up today and played well," GW coach Tom Hawkins said after the match. "We played through some injuries and beat a good Xavier team."
Next up for the Colonials is a match with St. Bonaventure on Saturday, April 6, beginning at noon at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. GW, Xavier and St. Bonaventure are all vying for the conference's second seed in the A-10 Tournament behind league-leader Richmond.
