WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials men's tennis team got past St. Bonaventure, 4-3, Saturday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility, in a pivotal match with A-10 Tournament seeding implications. GW, which had been vying with Xavier and St. Bonaventure for the conference's second seed in the A-10 Tournament, have head-to-head victories over the Musketeers and Bonnies and figure to get the No. 2 seed behind league-leader Richmond. GW won its eighth straight match to improve to 14-6 in the spring while St. Bonaventure dropped to 10-9.
After the Colonials won the doubles point by capturing the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, the Bonnies came back to win at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles. With the overall match tied, the victory hinged on the No. 6 singles match where junior Mike Melen (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) needed a tiebreaker to defeat Kevin MacDonald, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-1.
Sophomore Matt Hane (Walterboro, SC/Porter-Gaud School) posted a stirring victory at No. 1 singles defeating Vili Nurmi 7-6 (3), 6-4. Freshman Chris Moulton (Portland, ME/Brickhouse) also won, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles over SBU's Adam Price.
"We had to play two guys down in the singles where both Matt [Treadgold] and Kinzie [Wright] had to rest injuries," GW coach Tom Hawkins said after the match. "The guys put their heart and soul into it and came up with a big win. Matt [Hane] played extremely well. Jake [Jopling] played very well."
Next up for the Colonials is the Atlantic 10 Championships, Thursday-Sunday, April 11-14, at the Oxford Tennis Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
