Smoot is in his first year with GW in 2019-20. He recently completed his playing career at VMI, graduating in May with a degree in Economics and Business. Across his four years with the Keydets, he played catcher, first base and designated hitter. He appeared in 52 games in 2019 for VMI, driving in 18 runs and scoring 38 times while walking more times (39) than striking out (32).

Smoot will be called upon to work with the Colonials' catchers, something he has experience in while working as a coach for the Dominican Baseball Camps in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic and also with the Jonathan Hadra Baseball Camps in Lexington, Va.
